We’re working with Stop the Traffik: Southampton and Test Valley Group on a project to raise awareness of modern slavery in Southampton. We need your help to make it happen.
Is slavery a problem in the UK?
- An estimated 14,000 people are enslaved in the UK
- Slavery was legally abolished 200 years ago
- The Modern Slavery Act 2015 has given impetus to the fight against the crime of modern slavery, but…
- …the police still need information from the ordinary citizen to make prosecutions.
Help us raise awareness of modern day slavery in the UK
The GIFT Box is a street installation that helps educate the public about modern slavery. It’s a walk-in piece of public art, symbolising the way in which traffickers entice their victims with false promises. There’s a bright outside talking the “gift” of a new life, but once inside you realise the deception. There’s a 3D thought provoking and interactive experience of real stories from victims of human trafficking across the UK.
The GIFT Box will be at Winchester Cathedral on Sat 13 and Sun 14 May, and on Above Bar Street in Southampton on Tues 16 and Weds 17 May.
How can I help?
We need volunteers to talk to people. We need hosts to man the box during the day, helping raise awareness of modern day slavery with passersby.
What would I say?
It’s ok, we’ll have a short training session in advance of the day so that you know how the box works and what to say.
Other ways you can help
We need 8 strong volunteers in each location to help assemble and/or disassemble the box.
If you’d like to get involved, please email Helen.
